“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46:10-11
My starting point today comes from reading Psalm 46 and focusing on verse 10 ‘Be still and know that I am God,’ followed by listening to the American Christian songwriter, Don Moen’s worship song ‘Be Still & Know.’ Focusing on the lyrics of the song helps me to reflect on the here and now, rather than allowing my thoughts to race ahead, worrying about the future, or looking backwards and getting caught up in the past.
It’s so easy to lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas isn’t it, when we are rushing about, trying to get through our never-ending to-do lists. But mindfulness and the joy that the birth of Jesus brings, are essential elements that help us reconnect with the true spirit of this most holy of seasons.
The story of Jesus’ birth is a reminder of God’s profound presence in our lives. By setting aside quiet time to practice mindfulness we can become more attuned to God’s presence, experiencing His peace and joy in each moment. God’s gift of joy is not found in grand gestures, or perfect decorations, rather, it is found in the simplest of things – a child’s laughter, relaxed times with friends and family, worship – these are the moments when God’s joy shines brightest.
We should take time each day to engage in mindful prayer. Focusing on our breathing, letting go of distractions, and opening our hearts to God's love and joy. This practice can bring a profound sense of peace and happiness, even in the busiest of times. Start or end today by listing the things you are grateful for. This simple act can transform your mindset and fill your heart with joy.
Just as the angels announced the birth of Jesus with great joy, we too can spread joy by sharing kindness and love with those around us. Acts of kindness, no matter how small, can bring immense joy to both the giver and the receiver.
As we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, let us remember to slow down, be present, and find joy in the simple, sacred moments. May this mindfulness guide us to a deeper connection with God and a fuller experience of the joy that Christmas brings.
Heavenly Father, in this season of joy and celebration, we come to You seeking mindfulness and peace. Help us to slow down, to be present in each moment, and to recognise Your presence in our lives. May we find joy in the simple, everyday moments and share this joy with others. Fill our hearts with Your love and guide us to live each day with gratitude and grace. Amen.
