I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word, I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.
(Psalm 130 v 5&6)
This Advent season, the run up to Christmas, can be difficult for many, despite what the Christmas adverts and shops would have us believe. It is not all sparkle, tinsel, and lights.
We are all too often weighed down by the busyness of life, we may have financial limitations, we may feel lost or lonely or are suffering the pain of loss and grief.
So, what is our hope at Christmas?
This Advent let us be like the Psalmist and remember we can find hope in the knowledge that our Lord and His comfort are with us and in all of our life’s problems. Let us put our hope in His word.
The true Christmas hope is not a flimsy hope dependent on the sparkle (or lack thereof) in our current circumstances. Instead, it is a hope grounded in the assurance of a Saviour who came to earth, dwelt among us, redeemed us from sin and who will come again to make all things new.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, as we celebrate the season of Christ’s birth, there is nothing that stands brighter than hope. The thrill of hope. The excitement that no matter what life brings us, whatever our circumstances, we still have hope because of that night divine, that first Christmas when you gave us the gift of hope wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. Thank you, Father, for your immeasurable gift. Amen.
