Day 59 - Quiet Prayer

“Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace." Matt 6:6 (The MSG).

Eugene Peterson’s beautiful translation of Matthew 6:6 offers a way of prayer that we should try to follow. True prayer isn't a stage; it’s a sanctuary. It’s the one place where the mask can be dropped and the script can be shredded. When we find that secluded place we aren't just seeking silence; we are seeking the courage to be seen as we actually are.

God of quiet places, draw me away from the noise that keeps tugging at my attention. Lead me to that hidden corner — not far away, but deep within — where I don’t have to pretend, perform, or impress.

In this secluded place, let me come before you simply, honestly, without the need to be anything more than your child.

Shift my focus, Lord. Turn my gaze from my own struggling to your steady presence. From my anxieties to your unhurried grace. From my rehearsed words to the quiet truth that you already know me.

Help me, Lord, to pray for those around me. For those who support me, and those who need support themselves. For our children and young people, who we need to guide and protect, but also to listen to and shape our world with. For all in our community, and those who work to build community around us. We pray for our nation, and for our world – at a time of great struggle and hardship may we learn to walk in solidarity and strength, remembering to care for each and everyone, with justice, respect and love for all. We pray for the worldwide church of Jesus Christ, that we may strive to serve you, and to make your love known to our world through our witness.

Here, in this stillness, teach me to rest in you. Teach me to breathe. Teach me to be with you. Let me begin to sense your grace, not just here in the quiet, but in the noise, the mess, the conversations of my life. Let the simplicity I find here reshape the way I live in the world.

And today, and every day, may my life reflect your glory and grace. In the wonderful name of our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
