Day 87 - A simple pattern for a complicated world

I’ll be honest: I often find prayer difficult.

Not because I don’t believe, or because I think it doesn’t matter — but because my mind wanders, my words feel clumsy, and I worry I’m doing it “wrong.” Some days I don’t know where to start. Some days I start then realise my thoughts have drifted. Other days I wonder whether silence counts when words won’t come.

That’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus knew we’d overthink prayer. He knew we’d turn it into something heavy, something intended to impress. So instead of long explanations, He gave us a pattern — not to restrict us, but to free us. A gentle rhythm. Something steady enough to hold us when our thoughts feel scattered.

“Our Father…”

Prayer doesn’t begin with having the right words. It begins with remembering who God is. Not distant. Not disapproving. Not waiting for us to impress Him. A Father who welcomes us — exactly as we are, minds buzzing and thoughts half-formed.

“Your kingdom come…”

Before we rush into requests, this line slows us down. It gently lifts our eyes from our to-do lists and fixes them on something larger. God’s ways. God’s heart. It reminds us that prayer isn’t about bending heaven to our will, but letting our priorities be quietly reshaped.

“Give us today our daily bread…”

There’s so much kindness in this line. We’re invited to ask — and not for everything at once. Just today’s needs. Today’s strength. Today’s patience, courage, clarity, peace. Prayer grounds us in the present, reminding us we don’t have to worry about tomorrow yet.

“Forgive us… as we forgive…”

This is where prayer starts to soften us. Not to shame us, but to heal us. We’re reminded that we live by grace — and that grace doesn’t stop with us. Slowly, prayer loosens the grip of resentment and keeps bitterness from taking root.

“Lead us… deliver us…”

We don’t navigate life alone. Especially when the world feels unpredictable or overwhelming, prayer becomes a way of placing our trust back where it belongs. God guides. God protects. God steadies.

This simple framework still works because human hearts haven’t changed — and neither has God. When life feels noisy, prayer doesn’t demand perfection. It offers presence. A returning. A becoming centred again.

Let’s pray:

Father, You are close, and Your name is good.

Let Your ways quietly shape my choices today.

Bring Your peace into the places that feel heavy or uncertain.

Provide what I need — strength for my mind, calm for my heart, wisdom for my steps.

Forgive the things I’ve done that pulled me away from You, and help me release the people I’m tempted to hold in resentment.

Guide me away from what harms my soul, and protect me from the pressures that try to pull me off course.

Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory — in this moment, in this world, and in my life. Amen.
