For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.
(Isaiah 9:6-7a)
This reading from Isaiah, reminds us that the birth of Jesus was foretold, it was expected. For many years, the people of God waited through sometimes rough periods for the One that would be the Prince of Peace. For all those facing challenges in their lives today we can look forward to the presence of the Prince of Peace in all of life’s circumstances.
In Luke 2:13-14 we read: Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.”
I love the Christmas season and everything that comes with it. From Nat King Cole with Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, to the Mistletoe and Wine from Sir Cliff. Even to the moment you have the wits frightened out of you as you enter a big shop and the full-size Santa you didn’t notice in a corner begins to sing when the sensor is triggered as you walk past, bringing it to life. The Christmas season brings a sense of peace, wonder, and awe. Ministers and Leaders have the unique opportunity to welcome everyone into the Nativity and the true reason we celebrate this time of year.
In our Bible reading about peace, we see the Good News brought to simple shepherds out in the fields. That must have been a scary time for the shepherds who’d be looking for a quiet nightshift with a settled flock and no untoward disturbance. Shepherds weren’t important in the eyes of the world, yet God saw them.
The peace of the Christmas season is available to all “on whom his favour rests.” That’s us! You and me! It doesn’t matter your job, your background, or your past, the name of the game is to let there be peace to all this Christmas.
My favourite service of all we put on in church is the Christmas Eve Watchnight service. It is a really special time to me, always has been, whether leading the worship or just attending. Churches tend to be full for that service and that is good to see. It seems to me that amidst all the preparations for the big day, the plans and the stress which tends to come with it, folks still find time to come into the calmness of church to worship Christ the Newborn King.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, as we celebrate Your birth, help us to remember why You came into the world. You came to save us from our sins and give us eternal life. Thank You for coming down from heaven and becoming one of us. Help this be the centre of our Christmas celebration. We praise You for Your great love! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
