Am In the only one who finds mindfulness difficult to the point of being intimidating? In a world filled with noise, busyness, and uncertainty, the practice of mindfulness invites us to slow down, embrace the present, and rest in God's presence. But goodness it can be so hard to find the peace, the time, the concentration to practice it.
For me, stillness comes from music and worship songs. For example, I find that the Hillsong United’s worship song “Still” beautifully embodies the concept of Christian mindfulness, reminding believers that no matter the storms of life, God remains our refuge and peace.
The lyrics of “Still” echo Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God." This verse — and the song itself — invite us into a posture of surrender. The world tempts us to strive, to worry, and to carry burdens alone. It causes us anxiety as we often try to conform and to fix things ourselves, forgetting about God. Being mindful reminds us that resting in God is an act of faith. When we consciously choose stillness — whether through prayer, deep breathing, or silent reflection — we affirm our dependence on Him rather than ourselves.
A powerful theme in “Still” is the image of being covered by God’s wings, as referenced in Psalm 91:4: "He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge." This image speaks to divine protection — the assurance that, even in the fiercest storms, we are held securely in God’s hands.
So, despite all the difficulties and demands that life puts on us, we should seek to be aware of God’s presence in every moment, rather than being consumed by life’s pressures. Mindfulness is not about ignoring difficulties, but rather about finding refuge in God through them. When we quiet our hearts and minds, we allow ourselves to hear His voice, feel His love, and receive His peace.
Mindfulness is not just a practice — it is an invitation into deeper faith. It calls us to be fully present with God, to release our burdens, and to find peace in His unwavering love. As we embrace stillness, may we draw nearer to Him, trusting that He is always in control.
Heavenly Father, in the midst of life's storms, we come before You, longing for stillness. Teach us to be mindful of Your presence, to release our worries, and to rest in the assurance that You are in control.
When fear and anxiety rise within us, remind us to trust — to be still and know that You are God. Cover us with Your peace that surpasses understanding and help us surrender every burden into Your loving hands.
Lord, guide our hearts to focus on You, not on our troubles. May we dwell in Your presence, seek refuge in Your grace, and walk forward in faith, knowing that You hold our future.
We choose to be still, to listen, and to trust in Your unfailing love.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
