Day 81 - How Great Is Our God

It always amazes me just how much Christian music there is that I haven’t yet heard. If asked to choose I’d certainly say that Stuart Townend is my favourite hymn writer, and probably his ‘The Lord’s My Shepherd’ is my favourite hymn.

However, that’s not the hymn that I’ve chosen to reflect on. I often ask Alexa (the smart speaker) to play songs ‘like Stuart Townend’ and enjoy the mix of Christian music she selects for me. In one of these mixes, she played “How Great is Our God” by Chris Tomlin, a renowned American Christian music artist and songwriter who has won multiple Grammy awards and sold millions of albums but was completely unknown to me!

I was transfixed by the music and the lyrics, absolutely captured by this powerful worship song with its strong biblical declarations. It speaks of God’s majesty and splendour, his enduring love for us, and it unites us in worship. Listen and reflect on the lyrics!

As well as asking Alexa for music choices, I often ask Co-Pilot, Microsoft’s AI, for themed prayers. So this morning I invite you to start your day with a heartfelt prayer inspired by the powerful lyrics of Chris Tomlin’s “How Great Is Our God":

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with hearts full of awe and reverence. You are the God who created the universe, wrapped in majesty and clothed in light. From age to age, You stand unwavering, and time itself rests in Your hands.

Our God,

We lift our voices in praise, for Your name is above all names. You are the Father, the Spirit, and the Son—the Godhead, three in one. Your greatness knows no bounds, and Your love reaches beyond our understanding.

You are greater than any challenge we face,

Stronger than our fears, doubts, and weaknesses. Your power is unmatched, and Your grace is unending. We declare that You are the ultimate Healer, restoring broken hearts and wounded souls.

Inwardly, we surrender:

Help us maintain heavenly vision. May our lives be centred on You, our purpose aligned with Your will. As we step into the calling You have for us, empower us to be vessels of Your love and grace.

Outwardly, we extend Your love:

May our actions reflect Your character. Let us be channels of compassion, kindness, and forgiveness. Teach us to love our neighbours as ourselves, reaching out to those in need and sharing the hope we find in You.

Our God,

As we journey through life, may our worship extend beyond mere songs. Let our every breath be an offering—a symphony of gratitude and surrender. We thank You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, who bore our sins and made a way for us to be reconciled with You.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
