Day 3 - The Helmet of Salvation

Over the recent half term holiday I visited the Jorvik centre in York as my daughter Poppy is learning about the Vikings next term in school. We learnt that after the Vikings settled in England they quickly converted to Christianity.

On display in the museum is a helmet that dates back to AD750. Amazingly it was saved because it was nearly destroyed by a mechanical digger in 1982. It is richly decorated and inscribed with the words in Latin: “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, God and with all we pray. Amen.” It was a way of re-enforcing the helmets physical protection with prayer.

I instantly thought of the passage in Ephesians when Paul describes the armour of God - “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Paul then goes on to say:

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” (Ephesians 6: 17,18)

‭‭

So let’s pray and give thanks for history and the faithfulness of generations.

Dear Lord

We pray you will send your Holy Spirit upon us, fill our lives with peace.

We come before you as you are our Rescuer, our Defender, our Refuge and our Strength

We praise you Lord our Creator and our Sustainer.

We bring our requests to you, the little things that worry us to the big things of this world

We pray for our church family, we pray for our Congregational Federation family and pray for our brothers and sisters around the world. We ask you will bless them, heal them and protect them.

We pray more people come to know you as their Lord and Saviour through our words and actions.

Amen
