Every now and again a song comes along that really challenges me and the one I have chosen today is one of those songs. It is on the theme of Remembering Christ through Communion.
In the middle of the song are the words:
Just to let me know You in Your suffering. Just to get me closer than I’ve ever been.
A few years ago, I, along with many others went to see the film, “The Passion of the Christ” and just like everyone else, I left that cinema in silence. I never wanted to see that film again. Not because there was anything wrong with it, I just couldn’t face the horror of the reality of the crucifixion.
When we take bread and wine and hear those so familiar words from 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, we tend to be anesthetized from what it actually meant, and those words, ‘just to let me know You in Your suffering, just to get me closer than I’ve ever been’ are really what we should be seeking through the communion elements.
If we can know more of what Jesus went through for our sake, then maybe it will bring us into closer communion with Him. As we grasp the sacrifice He made for us, then what we are called to do for Him is so miniscule in comparison.
I don’t expect this song will be everyone’s cup of tea, but the more I have reflected on the words the more I want to know about what Jesus has done for me.
However, I still don’t think I want to watch ‘The Passion of the Christ’ again!
