God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
Genesis 1.31 – 2.4a
Lancelot Andrewes (1555 – 1626) is best known for his role in translating the King James Version of the Bible from Latin into English. He began his daily private prayers with the appropriate verse from Genesis 1, giving thanks to God for the relevant part of creation. So, Monday light and darkness; Tuesday sky and water; Wednesday sea and land and vegetation; Thursday sun, moon and stars; Friday all creatures in the sea and all birds; Saturday animals. Perhaps we too can learn from this approach to daily prayer? Perhaps by starting each day with a meditative reading of Genesis 1 we can kindle a flame deep in our souls that will prepare us to face the growing challenges of protecting our environment and minimising our own impact on the beautiful earth that God created for us.
The song "So Will I (100 Billion X)" by Hillsong UNITED was inspired by the idea of God's creative power and the beauty of His creation. The song aims to expand our understanding of God's greatness and His ongoing work in the world. It's a celebration of God's creativity and the awe-inspiring nature of His creation. This prayer is based on its lyrics.
Creator of the Universe, your creation is vast and magnificent, reflecting your boundless creativity and love. As we stand in awe of the stars and marvel at the beauty of the earth, we are reminded of your power and grace in every part of your creation. Help us to follow your example and to love and protect the world you've entrusted to us.
If the stars were made to worship, so will I.
If the mountains bow in reverence, so will I.
If the oceans roar Your greatness, so will I.
Guide us to be good stewards of your creation, caring for the environment with respect and humility. Teach us to make choices that honour and protect the beauty of the earth, to reduce our footprint and preserve your work for future generations.
May we find inspiration in the wonders of nature and strive to live in harmony with all living things. Let our actions reflect your love and our gratitude for the world you have made.
In all that we do, may we bring glory to Your name. Amen.
