1. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly trust in Jesus’ name.

2. When darkness seems to hide His face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil.

Chorus: Christ alone, Cornerstone, Weak made strong, in the Saviour’s love. Through the storm, He is Lord, Lord of all.

3. Then He shall come with trumpets sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found; Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless, stand before the throne.

Throughout the ages, worship songs and hymns have reflected and encapsulated current themes, aspirations and issues that were and are of particular significance for each generation. HOPE is, of course, an enduring theme. I wonder how many times I have sung the hymn ‘Lord of all Hopefulness’ over the years. And in recent times I have sung the words of ‘Cornerstone’, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness”, in many different churches and gatherings and it has become a firm favourite of mine.

In an increasingly terrifying and confusing world people feel that wherever they turn there is no hope and are left despairing, desolate and desperate. Isn’t it wonderful that as Christians we have hope and an anchor for our souls and are able to offer words of life and hope to those around us? We don’t have all the answers but we have this great promise that whatever it is that our hearts are hoping for it is found in Jesus. He has the answer and He is the answer. We can allow this truth to inspire us again in the words of ‘Cornerstone’, from the opening chords to the encouraging lyrics of the first verse and on to the faith building chorus:

Christ alone, Cornerstone, Weak made strong, in the Saviour’s love. Through the storm, He is Lord, Lord of all.

(Rom 5: 5) In the words of the Apostle Paul: Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
