Day 62 - Trust in God

As I write, my mind is in turmoil because the spouse of a friend of mine has passed away. Although they were extremely ill, the end came quickly and at home. This type of death requires a medical professional to arrive, undertake tests and confirm death. After this, the police arrive, secure the scene, and gather evidence, in case there was foul play. Not surprisingly, the process was very upsetting for my friend. Thankfully, the process has been completed, and the death certificate has been issued. The funeral is next week.

As I write, my mind and heart are in turmoil, because a member of my family is lying in a hospital bed awaiting an urgent operation. After feeling decidedly ill, they were taken by ambulance to the local hospital, assessed in a corridor, and prepared for surgery. The operation should be straightforward, which is comforting.

As I write, my heart and soul are in turmoil because another member of my family requires major surgery. The procedure is complicated and carries significant risks.

As I write, my mind, heart, soul, and body are in turmoil because I need two operations, and my body is deteriorating. As my GP said, “my problems are multi-factorial. There is nothing desperately urgent or terminal, but you need to act now.” We then had a lengthy conversation about physical activity, mobility, changes in lifestyle, mental health, medication, health education, and group support. In summary, I am unlikely to improve my declining health, but I might be able to delay the decay. I know we all deteriorate as we age and having become a person of a certain age, I must accept the inevitable.

Why do I feel led to share this today? After all, death and funerals are common to most, and eventually all, of us. Well, we all face trials and tribulations, and we need to be sure that we can rest on God’s promises. As we read in Isaiah 40:29 (NIV),

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

So, rest on God’s promise to support you, and if possible, find someone to share your troubles. If you are a good listener and can support others do so, for God’s glory. We also have shining examples of hope through adversity. We have Sir Chris Hoy who has stage four cancer, but he has transformed into a torchbearer for living life to the full. Live your life to the full.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to have a heart and a mind that is open to whatever you want to show me today. Help me to learn how to talk and to listen to my Heavenly Father as His own dear child, trusting that he wants to help me more than I want Him to. May your Holy Spirit lead and guide me in my thoughts and actions. Help me to be grateful and give you the glory for the way You take care of me and have made me part of your own family through Jesus Christ. Amen
