Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.
Leviticus 25:19
Christian Aid Week reminds us of the biblical call to stewardship, justice, and restoration. God has entrusted us with caring for creation, advocating for fairness, and extending compassion to those in need. These principles are powerfully illustrated in Leviticus chapter 25, through the Year of Jubilee, a sacred time of debt forgiveness, freedom, and renewal. Just as the Israelites were called to release burdens and restore balance, we too are called to be agents of justice, standing alongside the poor and marginalized.
In Leviticus 25, God commands the Israelites to let the land rest every seven years, preventing overuse and ensuring that creation is sustained for future generations. This practice highlights God’s wisdom in environmental stewardship, reminding us that the earth is not ours to exploit but His gift to care for. Christian Aid actively works to address climate justice, supporting communities affected by environmental degradation, ensuring they have access to sustainable resources, and promoting the fair use of God’s creation.
Yet stewardship extends beyond nature — it includes how we treat one another. Many people today remain trapped in cycles of poverty, inequality, and hardship, facing challenges caused by war, climate crises, and economic injustice. Christian Aid’s mission aligns with the biblical call to lift the burden of the oppressed, offering practical support such as food, water, education, and emergency relief to those most in need.
The Year of Jubilee, observed every 50 years, was a radical command by God to reset society in fairness and renewal:
• Debts were cancelled, preventing generational poverty.
• Land was returned to original families, ensuring wealth was not hoarded.
• Slaves and servants were freed, restoring dignity to all people.
• The land itself was given a Sabbath rest, emphasizing trust in God’s provision.
Christian Aid embodies this Jubilee spirit, ensuring that those who are struggling are heard, supported, and empowered — whether through aid programs, advocacy, or partnerships that work toward equity.
Christian Aid Week is more than an annual event — it is a challenge to live out biblical stewardship. We are invited to act generously, pray intentionally, and stand with the vulnerable. Just as God commanded His people to restore justice through Jubilee, we too must embrace the values of compassion, fairness, and renewal.
A Prayer for Christian Aid Week
Heavenly Father, Creator of all things, Giver of life, and the Defender of the oppressed, teach us to be faithful stewards of Your earth, caring for creation with wisdom and respect. May we honour the principles of the Year of Jubilee, seeking justice, restoring dignity, and lifting up those in need.
Bless the work of Christian Aid — strengthen those who serve, and provide for the communities they support. Inspire us to give generously.
May we be instruments of Your love, reflecting Your mercy and justice in a world that longs for hope. Amen.
