I embrace art in all its forms: be it, painting, sculpture, film, dance, writing, photography, and theatre. Art should be a source of inspiration, reflection, and joy. It can also help us understand our history, culture, and the experiences of others. So, I view art as anything that gives me an emotional connection. This can be a one-to-one connection or a shared group experience. This emotional experience often transcends logic, for example, I often choose books by how they feel, rather than a logical approach of reading; summaries, reviews, and listening to recommendations. I include art in my paper journal, examples of art in my personal journal.
One of my greatest joys is to pop into art exhibitions. I do not mind if the art is paintings (in all their styles), drawings, sculpture. The most interesting works often come from amateur art groups, as the artists tend to be unpretentious and willing to engage in discussions about their creations. I encounter remarkable individuals who not only discuss their work but also explain what they aim to express and why they utilize art as a medium for expression or an emotional outlet. They talk of an emotional relief, something they did with their mother, or getting more than just a photograph. They put something of themselves into their art which is evident from their joyous faces.
We, as Christians, should have a similar demeanour. As we read in Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV),
“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face towards you and give you peace.
I saw this joy in the face of a fellow book-club member and dressage rider, Ros. Now, Ros is a warm-hearted and generous lady, whose face glowed as she responded to my questions about her mare, its training and performance. Ros also talked of her personal fitness, associated Pilates and problems with her piriformis (hip) muscle. This can make riding painful and affect her riding posture, as well as the horses’ performance. To counteract this, Ros has adopted a Pilates routine. Ros has also introduced a series of Pilates related exercises for her mare. Yes, Pilates for horses is a thing, which includes both gentle manipulations, plus strengthening and flexibility exercises. In addition, as horses are herd animals, Ros ensures her mare spends time with other horses to help reduce the stress of isolation.
I pray that we will display the same joy and openness as we share our faith and explain our times of worship with others. You see, there is a joy in community worship and supporting each other. Our shining faces should reflect this.
Prayer – Father, we thank and praise you for giving us the spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Please help us to use these qualities for your glory, and not for ourselves. Amen
