For many of us, studying for exams is a thing of the past. But for those of use with children, grandchildren, neighbours, friends the season of O and A levels looms large at this time of year. (I know they are called GCSEs but how can you then have an Advanced level. O levels were first introduced as far back as 1951.)

Let us pray for those students and those around them.

Heavenly Father, unfortunately these exams in our educational systems are vital for the future job or career prospects of 16 and 18 year olds. Perhaps our first prayer should be for those who will not do well in these formal exams, for whatever reason. Help these students and those who support them to realise that our system of exams does not suit all teenagers.

Jesus, when you walked this earth, you were a wonderful teacher. You used everyday things to explain your message: lost things, sheep and goats, money. Be with all teachers at this time; exam results matter to them too and contribute to ranking their schools. Come alongside teachers who are struggling in their own lives, perhaps with mental health or relationship problems.

Holy Spirit, encourage all students to revise effectively; there are many resources – show them how to make the best use of their revision time.

Father God, be with all parents and guardians who have students going through the pressures of exams at this time. Many parents take the long view and realise that grades do not matter except for a few years. Help them to take the stress out of this time and to make sure their children are well-nourished in body, mind and spirit.

Jesus, our Saviour, come to the rescue of all those who feel suicidal at this time. It is tough being a teenager, surrounded by constant temptation and the distorted views on social media. Give these youngsters hope and reassurance that nothing is worth taking their own life for and give them physical help in the form of an understanding adult.

Holy Spirit, pour your love into the hearts of all who are worried at this time whatever their role in the exam system. Be with invigilators and later on with the examiners; encourage them to be fair and consistent in their work.

Trinitarian God, bless this time of exam stress with your love and grace. Exams are tough but they are a necessary evil. Protect vulnerable teenagers through this season and give them true rest when the exams are past.

Amen
