But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
Deuteronomy 8:18
The word Remembering appears in the Bible a good number of times and when you discover that it gives you the hint that the word is important! For me, like a few others, I have difficulty in remembering things these days. I once knew a man who had a photographic memory and that was a special encounter. Some years ago, as a hobby, I worked as a reporter for Radio Scotland in the South West. In that role I was sent to interview a gentleman in one of the local villages on Guy Fawkes Day. I had heard the man’s name before, knew he was an important figure in the community, but had never met him. I knew he worked at the local museum all his life so decided to go in there to see what they could tell me about Alfred before I paid him a visit.
When the staff knew where I was going, they explained he never wrote anything down for he had a photographic memory. Get as much information as you can from him, they said. The quick visit to his home for a 3-minute interview resulted in repeated visits lasting 9 months. I was recording information for the museum as well as the radio station. During that time, I was able to build up a trusting relationship with him. When he spoke of the Truda shipwreck out in the Solway Firth in 1903, it was so realistic that you were looking out the window to see if the wreck was still there.
Barry and Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees wrote the song some years ago Don’t Forget to Remember, with the chorus:
Don't forget to remember me
And the love that used to be
I still remember you
I love you
Maybe God is suggesting these are the words for you today for whatever reason. Perhaps you have wandered away slightly from Him and he is saying to you: Don’t forget to remember me. You see, it is easier to wander from church and Christian activities over something somebody said in the heat of the moment, or an incident that happened that has caused hurt, than it is to sort things out and come back.
I get excited about the words of Isaiah when he says: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10.
As we face this day let us be aware that our heavenly Father loves us with an everlasting love and cares for us and won’t leave us on our own.
John H Sammis (1887) wrote these words:
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus
than to trust and obey
Enjoy your day!
