Day 35 - The Piano

One of my regrets in life is that I never learnt the piano. It would have been so useful to accompany singing in Church and unlike my guitar there’s not the hassle of constantly tuning. My son Isaac’s claim to fame is that he was allowed to play Paul McCartney’s piano when we visited John and Paul’s childhood homes in Liverpool. Can you imagine playing like Paul McCartney?

Did you watch Channel 4’s ‘The Piano’? Amateur musicians were encouraged to perform on street pianos in railway stations but unbeknown to them a set of judges were listening in a nearby room. One performer from each location was chosen to perform at a concert at the Royal Albert Hall. The amount of talent out there was amazing. I was surprised by how many people were self- taught. However, Lucy was the performer who stole my heart. Lucy is 13 years old, visually impaired and autistic but above all she is a superb pianist. She learnt to play through the Amber Trust. Her teacher Daniel first plays the piece, Lucy listens and then copies. If there is a tricky bit she places her hands over that of her teacher’s or her teacher physically moves her hand to keys. The relationship between Daniel and Lucy is something very special.

I want to be accomplished in many things but above all I want to love well. I want to love like Jesus does. Often listening and trying to replicate Jesus’ love is just too hard. I need to rely on the Spirit and sense Christ’s movements. I find it a beautiful image that in the music of living, when it gets tough, I may need to place my hands over his. Let Jesus guide me to the right key of loving.

Jesus, I want love like You do,

Sometime listening to ‘how’ is not enough,

I need Your Spirit to help me ‘do’.

Help me follow where You lead,

Help me place my hands over Yours,

So that my compassion follows the notes of Your compassion

My care follows Your care,

My sense of justice is in the same key as Yours.

Jesus, You are life’s greatest teacher.

Amen.
